Litter Box Training Bottle Babies
Litter box training is one of the easier parts of raising kittens โ they want to be clean. Your job is mostly to provide the right setup at the right time.
When to start
Around 3 weeks old, kittens begin trying to eliminate on their own. This is your cue to introduce a shallow box. Until then, continue stimulation after every feeding.
The right box
- Shallow: a baking pan, the lid of a shoebox, or a low-sided tray
- Big enough to turn around in but easy to climb into
- Placed away from food and bedding, in a quiet spot
Safe litter for kittens under 8 weeks
Use non-clumping litter only. Clumping clay can stick to paws, get groomed off, and cause life-threatening blockages in tiny intestines.
Good options:
- Non-clumping clay
- Paper pellets
- Pine pellets (unscented)
Skip: scented litter, clumping clay, crystal/silica litter.
Helping them get the idea
- After feeding, gently set each kitten in the box
- Run their paw through the litter once
- Praise softly if they squat or scratch
- Move any accidents into the box so the scent is there
Most kittens catch on within a few days.
Common hiccups
- Won't use it: try a different texture or location
- Eats the litter: switch to paper pellets immediately; they're safe if nibbled
- Goes right next to the box: the box might be too tall, too dirty, or in a scary spot
Cleaning
Scoop daily, replace litter entirely every 3โ4 days while they're little. Wash the box with hot water and mild soap โ skip strong scents that put cats off.
Transitioning to clumping litter
Wait until at least 8 weeks and only if no one is still tasting the litter.
A clean box, the right litter, and gentle patience โ that's the whole formula.
