First 48 hours

Within the first hour

  • Set up a warm nest (85–90°F / 29–32°C)
  • Place kittens together on a covered heating pad
  • Wait until they feel warm before attempting to feed
  • Locate your nearest emergency vet's phone number

Supplies to gather today

  • Kitten milk replacer (KMR) powder or liquid
  • Bottles + several sized nipples
  • Small kitchen scale (in grams)
  • Soft towels and washcloths
  • Heating pad or microwavable warmer
  • Cotton balls or unscented baby wipes
  • Thermometer for the nest

Every feeding (every 2–4 hours)

  • Warm KMR to body temperature — test on your wrist
  • Feed belly-down, head level, never on the back
  • Burp gently after feeding
  • Stimulate to pee and poop with a warm damp cloth
  • Wipe face and bottom clean
  • Return to the warm nest

Every day

  • Weigh each kitten before the first feeding
  • Log weight (expect +10–15 g per day per kitten)
  • Change bedding
  • Check eyes, nose, and bottom for discharge
  • Watch for: lethargy, refusing food, cold to touch, diarrhea
